Born in Tokyo in 1929. While studying clarinet while studying at Keio University, he made his debut at Nanbu Saburo Quintet in 1951. In 1954, he formed his own band and has been involved in a wide range of musical activities, including concerts, dinner shows, radio and television appearances, both in Japan and abroad. In 1957, he was praised for his collaboration with Benny Goodman, who came to Japan as a cultural envoy. In 1977, he was invited to Montarese Jazz Festival (USA) and performed 19 times after his popularity, and was invited to major jazz festivals in Europe, Australia, and other countries as well as in the United States.
Since 1981, he has studied under the classical world and studied the basics again, and has continued to pursue timbre and expression.
In 2014, he was on the cover of the British jazz magazine Jazz Journal, and he is still actively performing at the age of over 90.
In 2007, he received the Order of the Rising Sun.
