The stage is on the West Side of Manhattan, New York in the late 1950s. Across Central Park, the East Side is a luxury residential area, and the West Side tells the story of a time when many immigrants lived.
New York was a time when many immigrants from all over the world came together for dreams and wealth. They each create a gang and stand against each other. However, Tony, a Polish immigrant, and Maria, a Puerto Rican immigrant, meet by chance and fall in love violently. Forbidden love involves many people and creates a chain of tragedy.

Works inspired by Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet. Arthur Lorenz, the screenwriter of the film, says it's a work that falls in love to survive in a world of prejudice and violence.
